Pomegranate Christmas cocktail

I stumbled upon this combination three years ago when I had leftover cranberry sauce and a bottle of pomegranate juice gathering dust in the fridge. The result was unexpectedly bright and balanced, cutting through the richness of holiday meals without feeling heavy or overly sweet. It quickly replaced my usual mulled wine because it requires zero simmering time and looks stunning in any glass.

Ingredients

For the Cocktail
  • 2 oz vodka preferably a neutral, high-quality brand
  • 1.5 oz pomegranate juice freshly squeezed or unsweetened store-bought
  • 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup adjust to taste based on sweetness of pomegranate juice
  • 2-3 fresh cranberries
  • 1 strip orange peel zest only, no white pith
For Garnish
  • Ice cubes large preferred
  • Extra fresh cranberries or a rosemary sprig for decoration

Method

  1. Muddle the aromatics: In a cocktail shaker, place the strip of orange peel and 2-3 fresh cranberries. Gently muddle to release the citrus oils and crush the berries slightly. Do not over-muddle, or you will release bitter seeds.
  2. Combine liquids: Add the vodka, pomegranate juice, fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup to the shaker.
  3. Shake vigorously: Fill the shaker with ice cubes. Seal tightly and shake hard for about 10-15 seconds. You want the outside of the shaker to feel very cold. This chills the drink rapidly and dilutes it just enough to soften the alcohol bite.
  4. Strain: Double-strain the mixture into a chilled coupe or rocks glass filled with fresh ice. Using a fine-mesh strainer helps catch any small bits of orange pith or cranberry skin, ensuring a silky texture.
  5. Garnish and serve: Drop a few fresh cranberries into the drink for visual appeal. Optionally, express an additional twist of orange peel over the top to release aromatic oils before dropping it in. Serve immediately.

Notes

One small adjustment transformed this from good to essential: adding a splash of orange zest before muddling. The oils lift the tartness of the pomegranate, making the drink feel complex rather than just fruity. Serve it chilled with large ice cubes to keep the dilution minimal while you sip.
