Apple Beer Bread

No ratings yet
If you've ever wondered why I keep a six-pack of your favorite craft beer in the fridge alongside my flour and eggs, it's because this Apple Beer Bread is hands down my ultimate weeknight hero. There is something incredibly comforting about pulling a loaf straight from the oven that smells like caramelized apples, toasted yeast, and warm spices filling up the whole kitchen—it's basically homemade bread without the hassle of kneading or rising dough. I love making this when I need a quick dinner solution; it pairs perfectly with a simple salad or even melts into a gooey topping for vanilla ice cream. The secret to getting that perfect texture is to mix everything as little as possible so you don't develop gluten, which keeps the inside tender and fluffy instead of tough. Trust me, you won't believe how easy it is to make from scratch right in your own pan!

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 large egg lightly beaten
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk or regular milk plus 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 3/4 cup apple cider or your favorite craft beer amber ales work best!
  • 2 tablespoons melted unsalted butter
Mix-ins
  • 1 large apple peeled, cored, and diced into small 1/4-inch pieces (about 2 cups)
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans optional

Method

  1. Prep your oven and pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a standard 9x5-inch loaf pan with butter or cooking spray. If you want an extra crispy crust, you can lightly dust the pan with a little flour.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt until well combined. Make a small well in the center of the dry mixture.
  3. Add the wet ingredients: To the well, add the beaten egg, buttermilk (or milk/lemon juice mixture), melted butter, and your chosen liquid (cider or beer). Stir gently with a spatula just until the flour looks like wet sand. Do not overmix!
  4. Fold in the apples: Using a rubber spatula, gently fold in the diced apples and chopped nuts if using. You want to see some streaks of flour remaining; that is perfectly fine and will help keep the bread tender.
  5. Bake until golden: Pour the batter into your prepared loaf pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the top is deep golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs.
  6. Cool and serve: Let the bread cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before turning it out onto a wire rack to cool completely. Slice and enjoy warm, straight from the oven!

Notes

Substitutions: If you don't have buttermilk, mix 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar with your regular milk and let it sit for 5 minutes to curdle slightly. For the liquid, feel free to swap the beer for apple cider if you want a sweeter, more autumnal flavor, though I highly recommend trying an amber ale first for that nutty depth!
Storage: This bread stays fresh in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. If it's already sliced, wrap the whole loaf tightly in plastic wrap or foil before storing. It also freezes beautifully—just slice what you need and freeze the rest!
Serving Suggestions: Serve warm with a pat of butter, drizzled with honey, or alongside a crisp green salad for a hearty meal. It's also fantastic as a base for apple cider glaze or just plain.
