Method
- Prep your oven and pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a standard 9x5-inch loaf pan with butter or cooking spray. If you want an extra crispy crust, you can lightly dust the pan with a little flour.
- Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt until well combined. Make a small well in the center of the dry mixture.
- Add the wet ingredients: To the well, add the beaten egg, buttermilk (or milk/lemon juice mixture), melted butter, and your chosen liquid (cider or beer). Stir gently with a spatula just until the flour looks like wet sand. Do not overmix!
- Fold in the apples: Using a rubber spatula, gently fold in the diced apples and chopped nuts if using. You want to see some streaks of flour remaining; that is perfectly fine and will help keep the bread tender.
- Bake until golden: Pour the batter into your prepared loaf pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the top is deep golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs.
- Cool and serve: Let the bread cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before turning it out onto a wire rack to cool completely. Slice and enjoy warm, straight from the oven!

Notes
Substitutions: If you don't have buttermilk, mix 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar with your regular milk and let it sit for 5 minutes to curdle slightly. For the liquid, feel free to swap the beer for apple cider if you want a sweeter, more autumnal flavor, though I highly recommend trying an amber ale first for that nutty depth!
Storage: This bread stays fresh in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. If it's already sliced, wrap the whole loaf tightly in plastic wrap or foil before storing. It also freezes beautifully—just slice what you need and freeze the rest!
Serving Suggestions: Serve warm with a pat of butter, drizzled with honey, or alongside a crisp green salad for a hearty meal. It's also fantastic as a base for apple cider glaze or just plain.
