Halloween Dessert Spider Treat

No ratings yet
I stopped trying to make elaborate spider webs from spun sugar after the time I burned my tongue on a hot candy thread. This treat uses simple cookies and chocolate, which means it’s forgiving if you’re rushing out the door for trick-or-treating.

Ingredients

For the Spiders
  • 12 large vanilla sandwich cookies such as Oreos
  • 24 mini chocolate chips semi-sweet or milk chocolate
  • 3 tablespoons white chocolate chips melted
  • 1/8 teaspoon black edible food coloring gel mixed into the melted white chocolate
For Assembly
  • Parchment paper

Method

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the vanilla sandwich cookies flat-side up on the prepared sheet. Ensure they are clean and dry.
  2. Place one mini chocolate chip in the center of each cookie. This will act as the spider’s body.
  3. Melt the white chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl in 15-second intervals, stirring between each interval until smooth. Stir in the black food coloring gel until you achieve a deep charcoal gray or black color. Transfer to a small piping bag or a zip-top bag with the corner snipped off.
  4. Pipe three short legs on each side of the cookie (six legs total). Angle them slightly outward and upward for a realistic spider look. You should have two clusters of legs extending from either side of the central chocolate chip body.
  5. Allow the treats to set at room temperature for about 10 minutes, or until the white chocolate legs are firm to the touch. If your kitchen is warm, place them in the refrigerator for 5 minutes to speed up the process.

Notes

It’s been in my rotation for years because kids love them and adults don’t hate eating them. The secret is letting the chocolate set completely before touching the legs; otherwise, they just flop over like a dead fly. I usually make these on Sunday so they’re ready for Monday school parties or Tuesday snack boxes.
