I have salads every Monday through Friday for lunch and one of my favorite parts of them are my homemade dressings. I opt for dairy free dressings and this can be pretty costy at the store. But making them at home saves money and tastes 100% better because of the fresh ingredients.

If you’re looking for staple dressings to use on your salads at home, keep reading for 5 of my easy homemade salad dressing recipes!


Creamy Ranch

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of mayo (I use vegan)
  • 1/4 cup of plant milk
  • 1tsp of apple cider vinegar or 1tbsp of lemon juice
  • 1tbsp of dill, dried
  • 1tsp garlic powder
  • 1tsp onion powder
  • 2tsp of parsley, dried
  • 1/2 tbsp of fresh chives (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

This was the first homemade salad dressing I experimented with. Finding a good dairy free or even vegan ranch with good flavor can be hard to come by. What I love about this one is that its got a lot of kitchen staples so that if you’re out of you’re regular dressing, you can more than likely whip this up in a flash! The chives are optional but really help to give it that familiar kick from the popular Hidden Valley flavor. If you have dried chives instead of fresh, add 2tsp. And if you want to make it vegan, swap out regular mayo for vegan mayo!

How to make it:

For this salad dressing all you’ll need are the ingredients, measuring spoons and cups in a mason jar. I keep all of my salad dressings in mason jars, but this one is a shake and done recipe! Simply scoop all of your ingredients into the mason jar, secure the lid and shake it until it’s combined. It’s as easy as that!

Tangy Honey Mustard

Ingredients:

  • 3tbsp of yellow mustard
  • 3tsbp stone ground mustard
  • 3tbsp of honey
  • 1/2 cup of olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

If you’re craving something tangy and sweet this is the perfect homemade salad dressing for you. It’s incredibly easy to make and goes perfectly with a roasted potato salad. If you have a few Yukon gold potatoes on hand, cube them up into small pieces and pan fry them. The contrast of something warm on a salad with cold veggies like cucumber and zucchini will take your salad to the next level! Sometimes I’m craving something a little more tart than sweet, and if that’s the case for you, adjust it by adding just a pinch more yellow mustard or a splash of apple cider vinegar.

How to make it:

For this salad dressing all you’ll need are the ingredients, measuring spoons and cups and a mason jar. Scoop all ingredients into the mason jar and give it a good shake! Once you make this one a few times, you’ll be able to save the clean up from the measuring spoons and cups and just eye the portions.

Fresh Summer Mint

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup of fresh mint
  • 1 tbsp of oregano (optional – I think it adds an interesting flavor!)
  • 2 small cloves of garlic
  • 1/4 cup of olive oil
  • 1/4 cup of mayo (I use vegan)
  • 1 tbsp of Dijon mustard
  • 2tbsp of honey
  • 1tsp of apple cider vinegar or 1tbsp of lemon juice
  • 2 pinches of freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4tsp of sea salt

This is a new recipe to me but I’m obsessed. I’ve recently moved into my first home and I’ve been able to move all of my herbs into large pots and crates on my back patio vs growing them on the window sill of my apartment. And boy have they grown! Mint is a new one in the family and it grows like crazy so I’ve been wanting to figure out a way to incorporate it into my meals. I don’t often drink, so I thought a salad dressing would be perfect! It’s bright, fresh and delicious.

How to make it:

For this salad dressing you will need the ingredients, measuring spoons and cups, a mason jar and an immersion blender. My immersion blender has gotten its money worth out of how many times I’ve used it for salad dressings and sauces for recipes. It’s a super quick and easy way to blend everything together without whipping out a blender for a small amount of ingredients. This is the immersion blender I’ve used for years and absolutely love it!

Erin’s Purple Basil

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup of fresh purple basil
  • 1/2 cup of olive oil
  • 2tsp of apple cider vinegar or half the juice of a lemon
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 2 tsp of mayo
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Basil is easily one of my favorite herbs. I would easily put it on anything if I had a huge abundance of it. After we moved into our house, we went shopping for new and fresh herbs. We have basil seeds at home to grow our own, but we went to Home Depot and saw the most beautiful purple basil that we couldn’t resist! I’d never had purple basil before, but it smells amazing and is very similar to green basil. It’s not as sweet as other basil varieties but it is bright and fresh and has aromatics of clove.

How to make it:

For this salad dressing you’ll need your ingredients, measuring spoons and cups, a mason jar and an immersion blender. This dressing is perfect on salads and if you add a little extra mayo and a little less oil to thicken it up, it’d even be great as a sauce! Top it on salmon, brisket or a yummy Buddha bowl!

Easy Sesame

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup of olive oil
  • 1/4 cup of rice vinegar, seasoned
  • 3tbsp of sesame oil, toasted
  • 1 1/2tbsp of honey
  • 1 1/2tsp of soy sauce (low sodium)
  • 1 garlic clove
  • salt to taste

Sesame dressing is easily one of my favorites. I almost always opt for Asian inspired salads if I’m ordering out or buying salad kits from the store for a quick lunch. I love the tasted of toasted sesame oil mixed with the perfect tang of rice vinegar and pulled together with the slight sweetness of local honey. It’s well-rounded and what’s not to love! Top it on any salad and it’ll take it to the next level.

How to make it:

For this salad dressing you will need the ingredients, measuring spoons and cups, a mason jar and an immersion blender. All you need to do is toss the ingredients into a mason jar and give the immersion blender a few pluses until the garlic is blended in. Take your salad up another notch by pouring this dressing on it and then sprinkling sesame seeds for presentation and texture!


Salad Topping Tips

Another thing I wanted to give you some ideas for are different toppings! Like I mentioned, I eat salads 5 days a week for lunch and they can get pretty boring if you don’t branch out with your toppings. Here’s a list of a few ideas!

Toasted Nuts

These are a great source of protein and salted nuts would work just fine, but toss some in a skillet and toast them to top your salad with and it adds so much flavor depth to your salad!

  • Almond slices
  • Cashews
  • Walnuts
  • Pecans
  • Pine Nuts
  • Sunflower seeds

Branch Out with Veggies

So I would consider basic salad veggies to be cucumbers, carrots and tomatoes, but branching out with vegetables can really enhance a salad. Here are some of my favorites!

  • Mandolin sliced zucchini chips
  • Thinly sliced radishes
  • Sundried cherry tomatoes
  • Cast iron browned cherry tomatoes
  • Roasted potatoes (or sweet potatoes)
  • Roasted asparagus (really good with the potatoes)
  • Roasted beets
  • Artichoke hearts
  • Raw broccoli
  • Cast iron roasted plantain slices (technically a fruit)
  • Avocado slices (also technically a fruit)

Don’t Be Afraid to Add Fruits

I don’t typically add fruits to my salads in spring or summer but I crave it during the fall.

  • Green apple slices
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Dried cranberries
  • Dried apricot
  • Grilled peaches
  • A squeeze of lemon will go a long way!

Legumes

Beans and peas help so much if you don’t easily fill up off of salads, aka me. Check out these options and play around to see what your favorites are!

  • Black beans
  • Navy beans
  • Lima beans
  • Fresh peas
  • Fresh green beans
  • Chickpeas

Seasonings

I bought a seasoning mix from a local farmers market that has changed my salad game. You’d be surprised when even a sprinkle of salt and pepper would do on top of your salad. Salt basically is a food enhancer so if you get bored with salads quickly, this is an easy step to help your taste buds be happy as well as your belly!

  1. Hey Haley, these salad dressing recipes sound super yummy! I am not a sesame fan so wont be adding that but I like the rest of the ingredients. Do you think I could sub it out for evo oil?

    I really do like fresh summer mint recipe and I can’t wait to try that out. Since it is summer time, I have been going crazy with mint-everything lol!

    I also recently discovered a new kind of beans that my lebenese friend introduced me to and it is called foul madamme (unsure of spelling). I have been making salads out of those bad boys and I add parsely, tmatoes, lemons, red onionsand avocados. You should try it too sometime- would love to know what you think!

      One thing I love about homemade salad dressings is that you can really play around with the ingredients. You could absolutely sub for evo oil!

      The fresh mint one was a pleasant surprise! I’ve been growing mint since May and decided to play around with it for this dressing and LOVED it. You could even throw some fresh mint on top!

      I just looked those up and I will have to try them! I think I can get them at Whole Foods but if not I found them on Amazon for sure. Lemons and avocados have been my go to for almost any salad as well. I also need a little more protein in my diet so I bet those beans with tomatoes, lemon onion and avocado would also be good with quinoa!

      Now I’m hungry ?

    Your article is the incentive I needed to go back to making my own salad dressings. I will certainly be trying out two of your recipes. Both the tangy honey mustard and fresh summer mint sound and look scrumpilicious! Sesame seed is not my thing.

    A quick question though – any idea of the approximate calories for each of these? I wouldn’t want to use too much and start to pile on calories – especially with the Ranch which I love but worried about its calorific content.Ha! Ha!

      Sesame isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but funnily enough it’s my favorite out of the 5 dressings! Though they’re all delicious in their own way. I’ve gone back and added in nutrition facts for you and anyone else looking to see what it adds up to! The honey mustard has the most calories out of all of them oddly enough – due to the oil. Just to let you know, any of them with mayo will be much higher in calories if you use regular mayo vs vegan or light. I use vegan mayo at home so that’s how I calculated the nutrition facts!
